Celebrating Your Wedding Anniversary

January 14th, 2008

Marriage is sacred, and with so many marriages ending in divorce these days, your wedding anniversary is certainly something to celebrate. You and your spouse deserve some sort of celebration, whether it is a simple dinner alone or a celebration with the entire family. Whether it is your first wedding anniversary that is right around the corner or your 25th wedding anniversary, here are some ideas for celebrating your wedding anniversary.

Wedding Anniversary Trips

One of the most popular ways to celebrate a wedding anniversary is to take a trip. Couples are so busy with work and family life, that sometimes it is hard to step back and just enjoy one another. When your wedding anniversary arrives, you and your spouse should treat each other with a romantic wedding anniversary trip. Popular anniversary locations include Hawaii, Las Vegas, Mexico, and sea cruises. Of course, for couples that are more active, or are seeking adventure, mountain climbing, camping and white water rafting are also popular ways to celebrate marriage. When you and your spouse take a romantic getaway to celebrate years of wedded bliss, you can reconnect with one another and relax.

Spa Treatments

Another popular wedding anniversary idea is spa treatments. You and your spouse can visit any of your local spas to enjoy a relaxing couple?s massage and skin treatments. Take a day to unwind and enjoy a soothing spa treatment to celebrate your wedding anniversary.

Night out on the Town

Of course, if you are young and strapped for cash, you may not be able to afford a romantic vacation or luxurious spa treatment. That should not stop you from celebrating your wedding anniversary. Even if you have young kids, your anniversary is a day when you should hire a sitter and hit the town. You and your spouse can catch a movie, a concert, or visit an art gallery and dine at your favorite restaurant. You can even spend a quiet evening at home enjoying each other. Light a few candles sit by the fireplace and just talk to each other. Anything that the two of you can, do together to celebrate your marriage will help you enjoy each other’s company.

Your anniversary is certainly worth celebrating. You do not have to spend a lot of money to have a good time at your wedding anniversary. Couples do not need expensive jewelry or trips to enjoy each other on this special day. The idea is to take the time to rekindle the flame.

Birthday Party Games

January 9th, 2008

Birthday parties with fun party games are events that we all look forward to. There are many different fun party games that you can use in your birthday bash. These games can be the usual but traditional birthday games that we all know. There are many games that are suited for people of varying ages.

Some of the usual fun party games that we recognize are games like Pass the Parcel. In this game the host wraps a surprise object in a number of layers of brown paper. Once the object has been fully wrapped, it is passed around among the guests who are seated in a circle. This parcel is passed during a session of music. Once the music stops the person who is holding the parcel unwraps one layer of the parcel.

In this manner a layer of wrapping comes off during the times that the music is stopped. At the end when the parcel is revealed the guest who is holding the parcel gets a special prize. You will also find lots of other fun party games that many other people play during their birthday parties.

Another variation of Pass the Parcel would be a game called Pass the Bubbles. This fun party game entails a bubble being passed among guests instead of a parcel. Since the bubble is lightweight and it tends to float off in any direction you have to be careful not to accidentally pop it when you are trying to catch the bubble.

There are other fun party games that we have all played at parties and these ones continue to be favorites even though many changes can be found in the way that these are played. One of the timeless party games that are used at birthday parties is that of musical chairs. For this party game a certain number of chairs are lined up in a row or a circle. The chairs are placed in a back to front formation so that the people have to sit on the chair that is facing them.

To make this game even more exciting there is one chair less than the players. Finally at the end of the game there will only be one chair left to sit on and the various remaining people must rush to see who will get there first. The winner of musical chairs and the other players are all given prizes of some sort for their participation in the games.

With birthday parties the games that are played can be either the old favorites or new ones. The choice of fun party games is only dictated by the tastes of the people. To cater for these wide tastes you will find many of the new fun party games that are a twist on the old time favorites. So pick a few and watch the enjoyment of your guests grow as they have loads of fun.

Birthday Invitation - Some Fun Ideas For Adults’ Parties

January 3rd, 2008

Birthday Invitation Ideas

There are plenty of opportunities for a little fun at the birthday honouree’s expense when sending out birthday invitations. First you have to offer to do the invitations on behalf of the honouree. Then the fun can begin. A photo of the honouree at school, or dressed in suspect fashion for a night out, or posing on the beach. They can all form the basis for great birthday invitations. And of course, if you have the computer know-how, photographs can be touched up and altered using programs like Photoshop. Ask around to see if you know anyone who might be able to help with the high tech stuff. Otherwise, there is always the teacher’s favourite, cut and paste!

Memories

A good idea for surprise parties is to compile a photo album of old photographs which can be presented as a special birthday present at the party. This will take a bit of organisation in advance. A nice idea is to have guests write some comments under the photographs, the more humorous the better. Or you can go one further and have each guest design a page of the book. In this way, each page will be different, which makes for a vibrant and fun gift. Some people put in photos, others write poems, others songs, and some attach bits of memorabilia. These are just a few ideas that you can give the guests in advance if they are unsure what to do with their page.

Milestone Years: 40, 50, 60, 70 etc

Milestone Birthdays can be great fun. An idea that works well as a semi surprise party is to offer to prepare the birthday invitation on behalf of the birthday honouree, and then to send out invitations made up like an obituary. Use a black and white picture of the birthday boy or girl in their younger years. Make the obituary as funny and warm as you can, but take great liberties with factual information, and have the deceased die in as ridiculous a manner as possible, but have the death in some way fitting with the person’s interests. A golfer dies on the golf course, attacked by squirrels on the 18th green. You get the idea. Then you can have each guest write their own obituary for the deceased, which can be read out at dinner. You can have pall bearers for the cake, a 21 cap gun salute, guests could be primed to wear black arm bands or black party hats, and any other funny idea you can think of. The key is that the surprises keep coming all through the party.

A Themed Party

Themed parties are not just for kids. Adults love them too, so you could arrange one based around a special interest. As with all themed parties, every aspect of the party from the birthday invitations, the decor, the guests’ mode of dress, should reflect the theme. You can give prizes for costumes, and have all sorts of associated games. The old favourites like musical chairs can work as well for adults as for kids.

So get in touch with the big kid in you and hold a great birthday party!

Best Recipes: Terrific Tiramisu Dessert

December 27th, 2007

Sometimes a dessert is just too divine to pass up on getting the recipe. This recipe for Terrific Tiramisu Dessert is one of them. A young woman named Shura showed up at an office party with this dreamy confection.

It?s too indulgent to simply describe with words, but I?ll say that this scrumptious version of the popular Italian dessert tiramisu is simply divine. With a mixture of espresso coffee, whip cream and Ladyfingers, the flavors will melt in your mouth and leave you wanting more.

If you?re looking to make a very classy, delicious dessert cake for a special dinner party or holiday gathering, you can?t go wrong with this Terrific Tiramisu dessert.

Shura?s tips even provide you with optional ingredients and special instructions.

Begin making the Tiramisu at least 3 hours before serving time, or early in the day.

Terrific Tiramisu Dessert

* 1 16 oz container mascarpone cheese
(What I usually do is substitute with the following: 2 8 oz pkg cream cheese softened, *delete salt; in step 1, in a large bowl, with mixer at medium speed beat cream cheese and 3 tablespoons milk until smooth and fluffy. *Increase confectioner?s sugar for cheese mixture to 2/3 cup)
* ? teaspoon salt*
* ? cup plus 2 tablespoons confectioner?s sugar
* 3 tablespoons plus 1/3 cup espresso (recipe calls for coffee-flavored liqueur but I prefer espresso)
* 1 ? teaspoon vanilla extract
* 3 1 oz squares semi-sweet chocolate, grated
* 1 ? cup heavy whipping cream
* 2 teaspoon instant espresso-coffee powder (This isn?t too hard to get. Your supermarket may carry it in their Italian section)
* 2 3-4 ? oz pkgs Ladyfingers ? a cookie of sorts. (The Italians call them Savoiardi. There are some American ones but they are not as good. Mushy, not crunchy. Try and get an Italian brand.)

Directions

1) In a large bowl, with wire whisk or fork, beat mascarpone (or cream cheese mixture), salt, ? cup sugar, 3 tablespoons espresso, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 2/3 of grated chocolate (set aside remaining chocolate for top of dessert).

2) In small bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat 1 cup heavy or whipping cream until stiff peaks form. With rubber spatula or wire whisk, fold whipped cream into cheese mixture.

3) In small bowl, stir instant espresso-powder, remaining 1/3 cup espresso, remaining ? teaspoon vanilla extract (if you use liqueur, then add 1 tablespoons water).

4) If ladyfingers are sliced, separate them in half. Line 2 ? quart glass or crystal bowl with one-fourth of ladyfingers; drizzle 2 tablespoons of espresso mixture over them. Spoon one-third of the cheese mixture over ladyfingers. Repeat with ladyfingers, espresso mixture, and cheese mixture to make two more layers.

Drizzle remaining espresso mixture on ladyfingers. Sprinkle remaining grated chocolate over top of dessert. Reserving one tablespoon for garnish.

5) In a small bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat remaining ? cup cream and remaining 2 tablespoons confectioner?s sugar until stiff peaks form.

6) Spoon whipped cream mixture into decorating bag with large star tube. Pipe large rosettes on top of dessert. (This is ideal, however my cake-decorating bag is in storage so I just use a plastic bag with a pin prick in it and make attractive blobs instead.)

7) Sprinkle reserved grated chocolate on whipped-cream rosettes. Refrigerate until chilled and flavors are blended (at least 2 hours).

Serve and enjoy.

Anatomy of a Perfect Picnic Party

December 19th, 2007

Hosting any kind of event is exciting and rewarding, but can sometimes also be stressful if youre not organized. If youd like to entertain your friends and family with a party to remember, a picnic party is a great way to have fun and enjoy your guests rather than spending the whole time worrying. Use these helpful and easy guidelines to create your own party success story.

Choose a Theme - Your theme can be as simple or elaborate as youd like - just about anything goes. Garden parties are lovely during spring, summer and fall. Some other ideas include Hawaiian Luau, beach, holiday, exotic Far East, pirate, hoe-down or even interactive murder mystery.

Put it in Writing - Send out invitations two to four weeks before the party. Frugal hosts can easily print their own on their home computer, or purchase a pack of simple invites from a discount store. Be sure to include the date, time and location of the party as well as your contact number so guests can RSVP. Remember to mention that its a casual picnic party so guests wont turn up in their Sunday best. If youve chosen a particular theme and would like your guests to dress up, put this in the invitation as well.

Keep it Simple - No need to spend exorbitant amounts of money on your supplies and d?cor. Youd be surprised at how a few simple things can make a big impact. Colorful disposable tableware and paper tablecloths instantly dress up a backyard picnic table or patio set; inexpensive fabric draped from the walls or around the porch roof creates an intimate ambiance.

Use What You Have - Walk around your house and look for decorative objects that fit your theme. Candle holders, table lamps, posters, throw pillows and similar items can simply be moved outdoors and used as d?cor.

Make a Seating Chart - If youre planning on having a structured, seated dinner, a seating chart can be a great way to introduce various friends and family members who have interests in common. Purchase some nice printed place cards from a craft store, or make your own from card stock and put them at each table setting.

Mix it Up - Have different activities going on to keep everyone entertained. You can either divide the party up into the cocktail hour, dinner, dessert and dancing afterward, or serve a casual meal while having various activity areas around your yard or garden. For example, you could have a dancing area on the deck, board games on the patio table, and horseshoe or croquet on the lawn.

Use the Web - The internet is an extremely valuable tool for planning any event. Communicate with guests, receive RSVPs via e-mail, research recipes or find that perfect party item youve been looking for. Dont limit your party to what you can find at the store down the street - you literally have an entire world of choices at your fingertips!

Keep it Casual - Even if you choose to serve a nice seated multiple-course meal, make it lighthearted and fun to keep your own stress level down. Serve everything family-style, cut down on dishes with disposable plates and utensils, and ask a few friends to help make sure nothing goes awry.

Cheat Selectively - Nobody said that hosts have to make everything themselves to have a fun, memorable party. Youll save yourself a lot of trouble (and time!) by letting other people do some of the work. For example, you could have your party catered by a nearby restaurant, or make the main course and order up some sides from a deli.

Splurge on Food and Flowers - These are the top two things that everyone will notice, and theyll really set the mood for the whole affair. Fresh flowers instantly brighten any room, creating a comfortable atmosphere and drawing attention away from areas that arent in top shape. As for the food - well, youre throwing a picnic party, and the food is the main event! You definitely want it to be delicious.

Relax - Dont run around the whole time wringing your hands, wiping up crumbs and working in overdrive trying to achieve perfection. Your party will seem perfect to your guests not because every little thing is in its place, but because they had a great time - and you should, too.

Afternoon Tea Party Bridal Shower Theme

December 14th, 2007

Planning a bridal shower doesn’t have to mean doing the same thing you’ve done for every other shower you’ve been to. Incorporating a fun theme can make the event more interesting and a lot more festive for everyone! Why not start with an afternoon tea party theme? Getting your guests involved will only increase the fun factor.

If you want your guests to arrive prepared, make sure their invitation states that they are invited for an afternoon tea party. Suggest they bring items to help lighten the mood, such as fancy gloves, hankies or hats that they can use throughout the shower. Getting the guests involved before the shower means fewer surprises during the shower and gives them an idea as to what they can expect. There will typically be some guests who won’t feel comfortable participating, so don’t let them get you down.

It’s also a good idea to have some extra costume pieces for guests who don’t have anything at home that they can bring with them.

The best way to get the emotion of an afternoon tea is to serve tea in fancy tea pots. Borrow these from friends and family if you don’t have them yourself. Just be careful with them to make sure they don’t break. You’ll also require fancy tea cups and saucers and encourage everyone to drink with their pinkie fingers in the air! Make it light-hearted and turn it into a shower game!

You can also use tea pots as vases and fill them with fresh flowers. These would make great centerpieces, placed on a doily or embroidered cloth.

To go with the tea, serve dainty sandwiches filled with cream cheese and cucumber slices. Scones with homemade preserves and thick cream are also suitable for this theme. Small cookies and squares will introduce some variety to your party menu.

An afternoon tea bridal shower isn’t complete without, of course, the tea. But don’t feel constrained to only this beverage. You can serve iced tea, coffee, or punch as well, but keep in the spirit by serving all of the drinks in tea cups.

If you have lots of space, set up dainty tables with four or five chairs at each table for the emotion of smaller parties going on at the same time. If tea is the main beverage, you can set up one pot per table and let your guests help themselves.

Keep the bride involved in the theme by providing some tea party garb for her. She may like the theme since it will take some of the attention and pressure off of her as the guests get caught up in their tea party. Having a theme also helps to keep the festivities going without those awkward silences that sometimes happen because it gives people who don’t have a lot in common something to talk about.

Make sure that you and your co-hosts are ready to jump head first into the shower theme. The more you are ready to get into it, the more willing your guests will be to follow suit. Your enthusiasm will be contagious and will make everyone else more comfortable to join in. If you’re having fun, your guests will too.
