<p>As I approached my fortieth birthday, I looked around at the different things in my life.  I had a good family with my wife and kids.  We had managed to get a nice home. <p>Deciding that it was time to get healthy as a family was not difficult.  There were other things that were going to be much harder.  Convincing my family that we should all do this was one thing.  After that, it was a matter of determining exactly what healthy choices were.  We sat down as a family to discuss our options.  We discussed how to follow a healthy diet.  To do this we wrote down what we had for meals during the past few weeks.  As we tracked our meals, the theme of eating out kept reappearing. One of the keys to eating right is to know what is in the food that you prepare and we accomplished this by eating at home more often.  Sitting down for a family meal allowed us to talk more and to discuss things that were important to us with the people we cared about the most.  We grew as a family as our bodies shrank.  We also went and emptied the cupboards of everything that we should not be eating.  Instead we would stock the house with more fruit and vegetables.  Not having the unhealthy food around would reduce the temptation.<br />After dinner we came together to take a stroll as a family.  We really could have chosen any type of physical activity if we wanted to.  Doing it as a family is what made it work.  It made all of us feel better that we made it a family activity.</p>
<p>We have followed our plan for several months.  Our health has improved somewhat.  More importantly our family has improved a lot.  It is a benefit that was completely unexpected.  I could not be happier that it did.</p>

<p>I saw a woman at the airport being told she had to buy two seats and I understood how she felt.   Being obese is not something that has happened all of my life.   During my younger years, I considered myself to be at a healthy weight for my age and height.  Through the years, my body changed and the fatter I got, the more people would look at me in odd ways when I would eat out.  I started to think about what I ate and how it looked to others.  Other people did not have to tell me what was healthy or not.  The stares caused me to eat differently than I wanted. </p>
<p>I also remember a time when I used to take a bus to get to work.  As my trip continued, the number of open seats disappeared.  There came a time where the only seat that was available was next to me and a parent suggested that their child take it.  She loudly told her mother that she could not fit on the seat with me. <p>All of these situations brought attention to what I already knew about myself.  My body was disgusting.  But feeling sorry for myself is what got me to almost 300 lbs.  I can&#8217;t blame anyone but myself for being overweight.  The only person who was going to solve it was myself and I could not do it by placing the blame on people that did not deserve it.
